ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAM FAQ’s

Why should I consider an Outpatient Buprenorphine/Suboxone program?

An outpatient program allows you to continue your daily life and get used to no longer taking opioid pain medications or using Heroin in your real world environment. It allows you to slowly taper off of the substances of dependence with minimal to no withdrawal symptoms over time and it has a much higher success rate than inpatient rapid detox programs.

Vivitrol: What is this and how does it work?

Vivitrol is a once a month injection of Naltrexone. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist that will when given once a month will block any effect of an abused Opioid and prevent that opioid from getting into the body. It is given to people who are addicted to opioids and have been detoxed off of the opioids and helps to prevent relapse by not allowing an opioid back into the body if someone relapses and tries to abuse and opioid while they are in recovery.  It is most effective for a few months up to a year after a detox program. A simple once a month brief visit to our office for an injection is all that is necessary for Vivitrol treatment.

What is Buprenorphine?

Buprenorphine is a medication approved by the FDA to assist patients with Opioid and Heroin dependence to slowly detox over time. Buprenorphine attaches to the same opiate receptors in the brain that Opiate pain medications and Heroin do. It has a stronger affinity for these receptors than any other opiate and it essentially blocks other Opiates from attaching to the receptors in the brain. Buprenorphine does not cause sedation or give you a high and its effects last more than 24 hours.
